22 January 2006

This picture is my grandparents farm covered in snow.

When we went to the parking lot of the airport in Copenhagen to drive to the other island the car was covered entirely in a cm thick layer of ice...we couldn't open the doors or anything!

Finally I had to take the train to get from one island to another because the bridge was still closed but the train goes down under the water!

Yay!!! I just figured out how to load picutres! Well this is looking back at the most wonderful WSC of 2006 and it's wonderful OC (if I do say so myself). These are all very awesome people that I hope to keep in contact with for many years...thanks for the awesome week guys!

21 January 2006

What an amazing week it’s been. So I got to go to Copenhagen this week, I had a wonderful train ride from South Western Denmark to the Eastern end of the country, it took a little less then four hours. It was a beautiful ride as it had snowed the previous night so the whole country was once again white. On Thursday I went to the Chinese embassy and I got my visa for six months! That took up about half the day but that’s fine because now I have my visa (not something cheap). The rest of the day was spent walking around Copenhagen, I went to H&M and did a little bit of clothing shopping, I needed some nice clothing and some WARM clothing. From Thursday to Friday it snowed an awful lot, which made for another beautiful morning to wake up to but also made for a lot of transportation problems.

I started my morning of what would be a historic day with a nice breakfast with my cousins girlfriend. When I went to take the S-Train (kind of like BART in SF) I found that all the lines were running late and some had been cancelled. I went into Copenhagen City Central for a couple hours, froze my ASS off and went back to my cousins apartment, the trains had been moving so slowly that it was time to go so I got my stuff and headed to the airport where I would meet my cousins husband Søren who was going to take me to their house on Fyn the neighbouring island where I’m planning on staying the weekend. We walked out to his car and an interesting type of weather had started occurring called ‘isslag’ (freezing rain) one once side of his car, the entire front and back windshields there was a centimetre thick ice, it was amazing and took twenty minutes to get all the ice off of the car. Then we started heading towards the bridge that would take us to the other island. We had been informed by the news that the bridge (storebealtsbro – the second longest bridge in the world) had been closed in both directions for the first time in its history and would be closed until six in the evening. That was okay because it was going to take a while to get there; we got there at 5:30 to find that they had delayed opening it until 8pm! We found a truck stop and went in and got some classic Danish fast food. When we came out we were given the unfortunate news that the bridge would remain closed until at least 10pm!!! So now we’ve decided to turn around and head for Sørens friend Kim’s house (his wife is from Texas). I do find this weather somewhat exciting (after I caught the train to the airport all the trains were shut down as all the tracks are covered in thick layers of ice, the roads are like ice rinks with thick layers of ice on them, every airport in Denmark is currently closed.)

Now it is Saturday afternoon and I’m still stuck on the island of Sjealand. Søren has work back at the airport this evening so it is now pointless for him to go home AND the bridge is still closed haha. The newest prince of Denmark was christened today, it was the only thing on TV this morning with all the European royals and wealthy people, his name is Christian Valdemar Henri John…yeah long name w/some political significance, yeah that sucks. I am now sitting on the train going to the other island where Kirsten’s (Sørens wife) parents are going to pick me up at the train station. I love taking the train it’s absolutely wonderful. And yes, the weather outside is frightful and somewhere there is a fire that is so delightful so if I had no place to go then I would say let it snow let it snow let it snow but I do have somewhere to go so this snow is absolutely a pain in the ass and my toes are frozen, my hands can’t type very well because they are frozen oh on that note…When I was at the Chinese embassy I had to wait half an hour before I could start filling out the paperwork because my hands could not write a damn thing they were frozen all they way. I couldn’t even hold the pen!

Edinburgh...

So a couple of days ago I went to the family doctor to get a couple of shots. It's been a long time since I've gotten any shots. He gave me one and then we were looking at some information on the computer about shots and going to China when I fainted, thankfully he was quick enough to catch me...haha I fell into his arms. He made me lay down for the next couple shots. Fun stuff.

So as of this moment in time...18:52 on January the 15th I am leaning heavily towards the University of Edinburgh. This could change very quickly in five minutes time. I'm leaning towards Edinburgh for several reasons, one being that if I choose Edinburgh I'll be in the same place for two whole years! If I choose Nottingham I'll be going to China after a year. I love the city of Edinburgh, I've never seen Nottingham (that will soon change). There is already a Dane in AIESEC Nottingham (haha that doesn't really matter). There was another good reason but I can't seem to remember it, oh well.

Watched the movie Calendar Girls with my grandmother today, hilarious movie! If you haven't seen it you should. Another great movie...Sex Games oh but that's the Danish name for it, in the USA it's called Cruel Intensions, if you haven't seen that then your life is far from complete. Though I doubt any movie would actually work towards completing your life.

I've been talking to Vicky the LCP of Manchester quite a lot. She is really awesome, she's been getting me in contact with AIESECers around the UK, specifically in Nottingham and Edinburgh. I'm really excited about going to the UK in February and even more excited to start school again in September...wow that's a ways a way in it?

Ok well that's my completely random for this evening.

And that's the way the cookie crumbles!

Haha, so I was looking at some of my video clips from the rockin city of Dayton, Ohio...THE MOST EXCITING CITY IN THE WORLD!!! Then Anh and I were talking when he mentioned this community on aiesec.net with AIESEC songs and dances so I decided to check it out haha! 09 January 2006

Well it’s seven in the morning here in Denmark. I’ve been up since five and can’t go back to sleep. I tried watching a movie, which usually works, I mean I can’t go to a movie theatre w/out falling asleep but it didn’t work this time. It’s freaking cold outside and really dark, it’s kind of disgusting but also kind of fun how short the day is. I just want to sleep because I know I’m going to be really tired later today and I do have several plans for this day.
I’m currently trying to figure out plane tickets and travel to go to the UK to take a look at Nottingham and Edinburgh, I’m going to go to a Leadership Development Seminar while I’m there so that I can meet some AIESECers and hopefully start getting involved in AIESEC there. Hopefully I’ll get their view on the two schools as well and maybe that will help me make a decision. I also need to figure out how I’m going to pay for school…so many things to do, I wish I had a million dollars in the bank that would make life just a bit easier.
So here is an interesting case, eleven Muslim societies here in Denmark are suing one of the countries biggest newspapers for a hate crime against Muslims. A couple weeks ago the newspaper published several political cartoons in regards to Islam picturing Mohammed (spelling?). As I understand it, some of the pieces of artwork were less then flattering and the newspaper would not apologize. Then several Muslim societies requested the prime minister to condemn the newspaper for this action and he said it was a matter of free speech and they had broken no rules, so he would not condemn the newspaper. I agree with the idea of free speech but disagree with people increasing conflict so I’m not really sure what I would want to come out of this conflict.
On that note, as I was packing to leave Dayton on Friday there was a movie on TV with one of the Wayans brothers (some actor). The movie was making fun of the black community, doing a lot of stereotyping. I think all these movies stereotyping groups of people are really lame, it’s like there deliberately working against people creating understanding. What is up with that? Here are these black people in America that are working against everything their ancestors, my ancestors have worked towards over the past century. At the same time that so many people are trying to create equality and cultural understand between different communities in America, the very people that come from some of these communities are working against it just so they can have a laugh? I’m really kind of confused about this issue…wow reading that over, does that even make sense?

Okay, finally going to start using this blog...

So I am coming to the end of my week in Dayton, Ohio (WSC) and will be leaving for Denmark tomorrow. I had a very interesting and exciting week here that started off in a...let's say different sort of way. I had two flights to Dayton. On the first flight from SFO to Cincinnati a lady died and we had to emergency land in St. Louis. We stayed on the ground in St. Louis for about an hour before we continued our flight to Cincinnati. On my flight to Cincinnati we were on the runway about to take off, we were on the run way speeding up for liftoff when the captain hit the breaks because some electrical went out on the plane. There we waited for an hour and a half to get the plane fixed before we could take off for a 19-minute flight. Yeah, Im not that lucky when it comes to flying.

This week with AIESEC was such an amazing learning experience, I feel so absolutely inspired and impacted by the many amazing people I met and the fantastic friends that I made.

Thank you AIESEC...I love you!
